Ingredients and spices that need to be Make ready to make Kaatla Kalia:

  1. 8 pieces Kaatla Fish large in size about 50 gms each piece
  2. To marinate the fish
  3. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  4. 1 tsp salt
  5. For Masala paste
  6. 1 inch ginger
  7. 4-5 garlic cloves
  8. 1 medium size onion cut into quarters
  9. 1 medium size tomato cut into quarters
  10. 2-4 green chillies
  11. 1 Tbsp cashew nuts soaked in water for 30 mins
  12. 1 Tbsp raisins soaked in water for 30 mins
  13. For Masala Slurry
  14. 1 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder
  15. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  16. 1 tsp coriander powder
  17. 1 tsp cumin powder
  18. For Kaalia
  19. 1 bay leaf
  20. 2-3 green cardamoms
  21. 2-3 cloves
  22. 1 inch cinnamon stick
  23. 1 large onion chopped fine
  24. 1/2 cup yogurt
  25. as per taste Salt
  26. 1/2 cup mustard oil to cook
  27. For garnish -
  28. 1/2 tsp garam masala powder

Steps to make to make Kaatla Kalia

  1. Smear the fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt and set aside for 30 mins
  2. In a wok heat mustard oil and fry the fish pieces on medium -high flame. Each side would take 1-2 mins. Set aside
  3. For Masala paste - Soak cashew nuts and raisins separately for 30 mins. In a blender add onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, green chilli and cashew nuts, raisins. Blend smooth. Set aside
  4. For Masala slurry - in a bowl add turmeric powder, Kashmiri red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and mix well. Set aside
  5. In a wok add the same mustard oil which was used to fry the fish. Add Bay leaf, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon stick. Add the Masala paste and on low flame cook for 3-4 mins until raw smell of the ginger-garlic is gone. Oil should surface on the sides. Add the Masala slurry and cook for another 3-4 mins.
  6. Add salt, whisked yogurt, keep stirring and cook for another 5-6 mins until oil surfaces and a nice aroma is felt. Cover for 1-2 mins. Let the Kaalia boil in high flame. Remove the cover and add fish pieces and mix the masala well with the fish.
  7. The consistency should be thick and not thin in this case. So if needed add hot water or else avoid. On low flame garnish with garam masala powder and cover. Switch off the flame and keep in Dum for 10 mins
  8. Plate and enjoy with steamed rice
